Pro bono case se refiere al servicio profesional que brinda un abogado en forma gratuita, "para el bien del público" y en general se da cuando la parte es indigente.

Si bien es cierto que la definición que aporta M2M es correcta, también debe considerarse que los abogados trabajan pro bono cuando puden obtener mas que dinero, por ejmplo, publicidad, prestigio

Cuando el Letrado/a trabaja "pro bono" se dice también que presta asistencia jurídica gratuita.

Estoy de acuerdo con Hebe. Aca en Australia los abogados generalmente hacen trabajo pro bono como parte de sus obligaciones profesionales (tienen que tomar cursos/hacer trabajo pro bono para obtener cierta cantidad de puntos para su registracion el anho subsiguiente). Pro bono es entonces exactamente lo que Hebe dice.
