Default Bear Market vs. Bull Market

I came across these two terms in the Buenos Aires Herald last week and was wondering if you had any idea what they mean...Any connection with the traits of the animals?? Only guessing...

Sabrina,
In the stock market there are two oposing trends:
bull market is "a prolonged period in which investment prices rise faster than their historical average."
bear market means "a prolonged period in which investment prices fall, accompanied by widespread pessimism." So, bulls good, bears bad...

Hi Sabrina!
Additionally, in Spanish, bull market is "mercado alcista" and bear market "mercado bajista".
Cheers!

Default bulls v. bears

I agree with all your definitions: "bull market" is a situation, in the stock market, where prices are rising and lots of shareholders are buying, and "bear market" is just the opposite. (you can find the explanation in the Oxford Dictionary of Business English).
Greetings,
Alicia
