To protect against risks associated with particular equities, sovereign debt or bonds, dealers have devised bilateral derivative instruments that allow credit exposures to be transferred. Such bilateral instruments are called swaps and entail an exchange of obligations, which provides a method of risk management. Swaps grew as an instrument to replace parallel loans and back-to-back loans used before the enactment of exchange control legislation.
