Hello all,

Quick question. In Spanish, when you talk about percentages, do you keep a space between the actual figure and the % sign?

example:

24 %

or

24% ?

I appreciate your help!

Nope, according to linguist Alicia Zorrilla there is no space between the number and the percentage sign.

b) ¿«Por ciento» o «%»?¿«99%» o «99 %»?

No se percibe una preferencia marcada en los libros de estilo entre el signo % y la expresión «por ciento». El diario ABC recomienda, por ejemplo, no utilizar el signo % salvo en «tablas, gráficos o páginas especializadas» (13), mientras que para El Mundo los porcentajes «deben ir seguidos del signo %, y no de las palabras «por ciento» (14). Siendo ambas formas igualmente correctas, se recomienda utilizar siempre el signo % por razones de visibilidad y economía.


Otro problema que no parece tener una solución universalmente aceptada es el del espacio entre el signo y el guarismo. Según El País, por ejemplo, »las cifras porcentuales se escribirán en guarismos, seguidos, sin separación, del correspondiente signo matemático (%)« (15). Según Martínez de Sousa, sin embargo,«los signos % y ‰ se separan de su cifra correspondiente por espacio [...] fino: 25 %. Al final de línea el signo es inseparable de su cifra» (16). Ésta es también la solución que contempla el LEI (17) y que ilustra el ejemplo que figura en su epígrafe 10.3.1: El 48 % de los congresistas entiende el alemán. Hacemos nuestra la recomendación de Martínez de Sousa y del LEI. Otro problema frecuente es la confusión entre «porcentajes» y «puntos porcentuales». Como se señalaba en un cabo suelto de Puntoycoma,« un índice cuyo valor pasa del 15% al 20% experimenta un incremento de 5 puntos porcentuales, y en ningún caso del 5%. [...] Para evitar la confusión que puede producirse con el empleo del tanto por ciento para expresar la variación de una relación entre dos magnitudes, es preferible recurrir a los puntos porcentuales» (18).
