The mark of a distinguished gentleman is the proper use of the semi-colon; it really gets me excited.

I can't believe such a fuss for a semicolon!!!!
And in a public place!! Of course public ads should be written properly!!! Is it just me who finds this article ridiculous?

Thank you, exxcéntrica.
I think that the semi-colon is simply misunderstood and misused way too often. The English language, without a central language authority, struggles in some of its rules (hyphens come to mind first for me) and in effectively disseminating consistent and correct information for the use of correct English. So, of course correct grammar SHOULD be used at all times, especially in public, but there are so many disagreements and lack of knowledge about the correct grammar that stories like this are funny. I found something similar in December that had more serious results: http://www.english-spanish-translato...e-edition.html |
