    Default truth claim

    hey lads!

I'm doing a translation into spanish of the fourth chapter of A. Pennycook's Critical Applied Linguistics. I've found constantly the term truth claims and I wonder whether you could help me out.

I've opted for afirmaciones, not reclamaciones, 'cause it fixes better and I've got three options so far:

    - afirmaciones de verdad
    - afirmaciones de la verdad
    - afirmaciones sobre la verdad

The first means not the same in spanish, it rather means real claims; the second fixes logically, but it doesn't sound natural at all (trust, I'm a Spanish native speaker). The third one i the one I've decided to opt for,so far, but it is not so convincing, honestly.

I appreciate if you help me out, fellas

I am not a native Spanish speaker but I'm inclined to use afirmaciones de la verdad ( but I might consider declaracion ).

Since a truth claim is a doctrine that says it alone is the truth, in my opinion it, is making an unequivocal affirmation of the truth rather than talking about (sobre) the truth.

And Old (not sure what that means...y viejo?),

You might want to consider that in this forum we probably have more "lassies" than "lads".

Bueno, And Old, that's fine. The ladies' contribution to the forum is incalculable.

Dearest Vicente remember that we, women, have stronger language skills than you guys (a fact) so, rather than contributing we are leading it.

I think truth claim is verdad pragmática. Is a term that involves a concept or definition and cannot be translated literally.

My dear Cotty, you must excuse my inexcusable lack of tact. Due to my weaker language skills I unwittingly suggested that the men are the leaders of the forum when, in fact, I meant to inform And Old that the women rule this forum and that without them the forum would be an empty, lonely place with little intelligent exchange. I have been duly reminded. My humblest apologies!

Verdad pragmática...interesting. Does pragmatic have another connotation in Spanish? To me it means practical and practical truth is not the same as "the only truth". Que piensas tu?

    Hehe apologies accepted

Well, these are terms that have a slight different meaning if you are dealing with religion, Pragmatism, or Philosophy, and as I said before they involve specific concepts.

When dealing with concepts like this, you can't really interpret them yourself by the individual meaning of each element that forms the phrase, rather you have to deal with them as a linguistic unit with a definition of its own.

I agree with you though, in that in religion it is a phrase that refers to an absolute truth or dogma, but the context Andrés is using is Linguistics.

PS: If AO gave us more context it would certainly help to find the most appropriate term in Sp.
