This is the international icon of happiness. And there are many books on this topic in order to measure it or to determine whether money makes happiness.

One of these books is written by the English economist Richard Layard, "Happiness", where he shows that the inhabitants of developed countries are not happier when they earn more money and they can buy more food, clothes and material objects.

What do you think? Are you happier when you have more money and then you can buy more material objects?

There is a saying in Spanish...Money does not make Happiness...and there is a second part...but it can imitate it very well...I don't know if there is an exact translation for that...

To me health is the most important of all. To be healthy and that my family be always healthy is number one in my list of prayers and priorities.

I am not happy when I have more money but it is true that with more money, you can have a better mental and physical life, you have to worry a lot less about some problems cause money will solve them for you...food, clothes, whatever, and you can even give yourself a nice vacation anywhere your money can afford...

Thanks, Sandra for your bright explanation!!

You are right: money is essential to be able to pay all the necessary expenses you need.
The question is: when you have MORE money than the amount you need, you can afford MORE expensive trips, a MORE expensive lifestyle. In this situation, are you happier? Does this extra money make you happier?

Thanks a lot for your time!!

Well, it is related to so many other things that I could not say MORE money can make you happier...
If you are healthy, if you are not heartbroken, if ....if, if, if...
So, you may have a better life but you don't have to be happier because of that, so many things involved in being happy...or happier...

Yes, Sandra, that's it. I completely agree with you.

This EXTRA money is not related to happiness, since happiness cannot be bought, at any price.

Happiness is a family, love, health, a job.

Thanks a lot for your comments!!

hmmm. Many people I know who have all the money in the world are very unhappy, and in turn many people I know who are not financially well off are very happy. I think with a lot of money, maybe you can be more comfortable, maybe you can take more vacations, etc, but if you have no one to share that with, you will not be happy for long, and you can not buy family, friends or love. I think, if you are smart about your spending, you may be able to enhance your lifestyle, have less to worry about etc, but happiness has to start from something more genuine than Money.

Thank you, Emily for your clear comments!!

Most definitely money is something more you can have in your life, but it is not the most important part of it. You can even have a lovely life with just the necessary amount of money to pay your living. Other intangible things should be the basis of your life.

Just to ratify what has been said by my colleagues: Let's Look at the same issue from a different perspective: what kind of problems makes people unhappier? Money problems or health or family problems?. Seeing someone I love suffering or being ill or going through a crisis makes me a lot unhappier than not having a single penny left on my bank account. By experience I can say than seeing my love ones happy and healthy, and being able to share with them; just knowing that they are still alive and I can reach out to them gives me the most important elements I need to enjoy living.

    Thanks, Hebe for your contribution!!

You really made a point in this thread. We are definitely more sensitive to intangible things (health, etc.) than to money.

That's why we need to stay in touch with friends/co-workers/colleagues through the forum!!!

    Thanks for your time!!!
