Volver al Valle
Return to the Valley
He regresado al Valle,
I have returned to the Valley
yo les cuento a mis amigos,
I tell my friends
soñando esos amores
dreaming of those loves
que en el tiempo florecieron
that in time flowered
y aunque me encuentro lejos
and although I am far away
de su gente no me olvido,
from its people I do not forget
conservo aún el cariño
I still feel the affection
y el amor que allí me dieron.
and the love that they gave me
Camino por las noches,
I walk by night
me despiertan los anhelos,
the longings awaken me
las aguas tan bonitas
the very pretty waters
que tiene el Guatapurí
of the Guatapuri(1)
y paso por la casa
and I pass by the house
donde yo una vez viví,
where I once lived
llegando hasta la plaza
arriving at the plaza
me desbordan los recuerdos.
memories overflow within me
Una mujer que mece una cuna.
A woman rocks a cradle
Un hombre que le canta a su pueblo.
A man sings to his town/people(2)
Un valle que ilumina la luna
A valley that the moon illuminates
y una montaña que besa el cielo.
and a mountain that kisses the sky
(bis) (repeat)
He regresado al Valle
I have returned to the Valley
al homenaje de Emiliano
in homage of Emiliano
con todo ese cariño
with all this affection
que su pueblo le brindó
this his town/people gave him
y me encontré esa noche
and I found myself (was) tonight
junto a Lorenzo Morales
next to Lorenzo Morales
que me enseñó canciones
who taught me songs
pa’ que las cantara yo.
so I could sing them
De Gustavo Gutierrez
About Gustavo Gutierrez
escuché que andaba triste,
I heard he was sad
que la paz de mi pueblo
that the peace of mi town
hoy es un grito de su voz
today is a shout from his throat(3)
y me cantó Leandro
and Leandro sang to me
versos para Luis Aurelio
verses for Luis Aurelio
porque él lo quiere mucho
because he loves him dearly
así como lo quiero yo.
just as I do
Las fiestas de Hernandito Molina
The parties of Hernandito Molina
oyendo las canciones de Alejo,
hearing the songs of Alejo
sentado muy tranquilo en la esquina
seated quietly in the corner
de la casa de Paulina y Pedro.
of the house of Paulina and Pedro
(bis) (repeat)
Que lindo es volver al valle.
How nice it is to return to the Valley
Ver sus campos florecidos.
to see its fields in flower
De amores inolvidables
of unforgetable loves
y de entrañables amigos.
and missed friends I've missed
(bis) (repeat)
(1) Guatapuri is the name of a river in Colombia. In the fact, "El Valle" (The Valley) is the name of a state or province in Colombia.
(2) Pueblo can be translated as people or town. Chances are the composer means town because he uses another word elsewhere for people.
(3) The actual word is voice, not throat. There are a few things in this song that do not translate well into English, and this is one of them. The last line, for example, actually says "and missable friends". Missable? It may make sense in Spanish, but in English...no way.
