Yes, you are right, deputy is a polysemy word, and I've already known that one of its meaning is "ayudante del sherriff o alguacil". But if you think about the context of this excerpt, it seems to be that the action is taken in a court room where Mr. Dove, the deputy, is pointing out allegations against the defendant trying to prove he is guilty. So, I would traslate , in this case, as "fiscal", because that's what a attorney does.
Anyways, you should know more than me about the translation.
