Just so you know(or maybe you just forgot it accidentally ), "pena" also means "shyness" according to a definition I just found in the "Diccionario Larousse de la Real Academia Española". It reads as follows :

Colombia, México, América Central, Venezuela Vergüenza o cortedad que puede tener una persona para ejecutar alguna cosa:
se sonrojaba de pena cuando tenía que hablar en público .


In my turf, it is quite common the use of this term when it comes to performing an action that will make you blush..you know..for instance, it might cause your face to get a sort of reddish-like color.. A tomatoe is the most common noun we use when making comparisons.
