Apart from being a synonim for "cerveza", in México, "Chela" is also the nickname of Marcela or Graciela, so some guys use to say "Dame una Graciela bien muerta", which actually means "Dame una cerveza bien fría" (Give me a very cold beer).

Unfortunately, I have no idea how "chela" became a synonim of cerveza.
