I have no familiarity with Cuban Spanish unfortunately, but I imagine it has its own unique flavors and expressions, etc.

I have been in a few situations where there is no "language" shared, but the communication is strong...if that makes sense. If you have time, you two can learn the languages and also learn how to understand each other. Those situations are fantastic.
